Suriname Renting a House
|
For Suriname too!
Traditionally, tourists usually stay in hotels our special holiday apartments. There are several hotels in Suriname in all price-ranges, from basic low budget guesthouses to high-end hotels. The last couple of years, some basic holiday apartments with basic services have been built for tourist, but these developments are still in an early stage. Surinamese people are usually very welcoming to guests. Therefore, Surinamese-Dutch people who visit their homeland often stay with family. The reunion with family members from the Netherlands is warm and is part of Surinamese life. On their turn, the family members in Suriname are often invited for a return visit to The Netherlands.
There is an other way of stay which is very popular among tourists who visit Suriname, that is renting a complete single-family (usually detached) home. These are fully equipped houses in normal residential streets and neighborhoods. Renting a house in Suriname is very popular among Surinamese who live abroad, but also among expatriates, trainees and
traditional tourists visiting Suriname.
Holliday Homes are often owned by Surinamese from The Netherlands, who let their houses during the periods they are abroad. In recent years, buying real estate in Suriname is very popular among Surinamese in the Netherlands, but also increasingly among Dutch people who fell in love with this beautiful and friendly tropical country during a short stay. Real estate prices in Suriname are relatively low and the same applies to the prices of rented houses: you usually pay somewhere between €75,-- en €200,-- a week. For a little more money you can stay in a luxurious and large
villa.
Holiday homes are often advertised by word to mouth among Surinamese, but houses for rent are also advertised by special rental offices, through Internet and through traditional advertising, like the little ads in the Surinamese “Via2000”. Like everywhere, you need to ensure that you deal with a reliable landlord. In the city it is
important to ensure that the house is sufficiently protected, for example, with good locks, a fence around the yard, or "thief iron" (iron bars) in front of windows and doors. There are holliday homes for rent in many neighborhoods in Paramaribo. Quite many houses are located in the north part of Paramaribo, like in the neigborhoods Ma Retraite and Tourtonne, near the city center and in a neighborhood called “Zorg & Hope” ("Worry and Hope") .
Especially Surinamese from East Indian descendant often rent (or own) houses near family in Kwatta or near the Indira Gandhiweg (formerly known as "Pad van Wanica”).

Rent a house in Paramaribo, Suriname
This is a new detached house in a side street of the famous Indira Gandhiweg (formerly known as Pad van
Wanica) between Lely Dorp and Welgedacht A. The house is situated in a quiet, rural and safe neighborhood, but the busy and long Indira Gandhiweg is within walking distance, so you can use the shops, supermarkets and restaurants which can be found here. The Indira Gandhiweg is part of the route connecting Airport Zanderij (JAP Airport) and Paramaribo town and therefore there are frequent and cheap public ISUZU buses heading for Paramaribo town.
The house is useful if you have relatives in the area, but can also be used by students, expats and tourists. The owners of the house moved back to Suriname from the Netherlands and live in a separate house on the large yard. Upon request they can provide information, help you with practical things and pick you up from the airport. At the back of the yard there’s a mini farm. Children are welcome to watch the milking of the cows and watch the goats, chickens and “doksen” (ducks).
